The Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will this morning, Friday, 09 June 2023 lead the provincial launch of the strategic plan for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) at Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa.
NCDs, many of which are preventable, continue to escalate at an alarming rate with a serious impact on the wellbeing and development of people. Gauteng as a highly mobile and urban province has a prevalence rate of around 40% for hypertension and 11% for diabetes which are some the main conditions leading to premature deaths.
The launch of the strategic plan will see the adoption and implementation of an integrated, peoplecentered approach to promote and prolong sustained health and wellness by fostering healthier lifestyle habits among communities.
As part of promoting the uptake of physical activity and healthy diet, the MEC together with partners which include the City of Ekurhuleni, Novo Nordisk and ProMed Technologies will continue to promote the Global Move for Health activities such as walking, stretching, dancing and aerobics.
