In response to the growing need for mental health services, the Gauteng Department of Health has prioritised the refurbishments and repurposing of some of its facilities to improve mental health care infrastructure and services across the province.
The MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will, today, officially open the new Mental Health Care Unit at Bertha Gxowa Hospital. The project is part of broader efforts of the department to integrate mental health care into all health services, particularly within the district health system.
The 60-bedded Bertha Gxowa Mental Health Unit will provide a range of services from voluntary admission, assisted care, emergency mental health services, 72-hour assessment of involuntary mental health care users, and further care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
