In a bid to improve service delivery at Tembisa Provincial Tertiary Hospital (TPTH), the process to fill vacancies at the facility is underway with various positions which include nursing, medical, allied and support services already filled while others are at various stages of recruitment including post advertisement.

Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko when responding to a question from the Provincial Legislature gave an assurance that the department was working with the TPTH to fast track the filling of the posts given the impact this has on the provision of efficient service to communities.

Staff turnover at the hospital was due to various reasons such as resignations due to better job offers, employees pursuing further studies, and health-related reasons.

The department is working around the clock to fill all vacant posts. Already, four medical specialists, two assistant nursing managers, a chief physiotherapist and four middle managers have been appointed. Interviews have been conducted for 12 cleaners and 16 administrative personnel, and three have already been appointed.

Out of the six vacant medical officer positions, five have been filled, while one position will be advertised. In addition, two operational manager positions for nursing have been successfully filled. To fast-track the recruitment process, runners-up from previous interviews for five nursing assistants and two staff nurse positions will be considered for appointments.

MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko also gave an assurance that the Gauteng Department of Health was also working to ensure that equipment shortages is addressed through the procurement of new machines and the maintenance of existing ones.

The procurement of equipment such as a Pulmonary function unit, an Electroencephalogram (EEG) machine, and a Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine has been completed and scheduled for delivery. The GDoH has also received a Transport ventilator and the Fabian Therapy machine.

In ensuring that there is continuity of care and service delivery is not compromised, the hospital always keeps extra theatre tables, anaesthetic machines, and ventilators on standby.
