One of the suspects linked to incidents of attacks on paramedics and ambulance hijacking in Mamelodi and Atteridgeville is due to appear before the Pretoria Central Court this morning, Thursday, 14 September 2023.
Members of the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) will be in attendance as the suspect makes his first appearance.
The suspect is linked to a recent incident (22 July) in Nellmapius, Mamelodi where an ambulance was hijacked, and EMS personnel were robbed of their personal and work belongings and kidnapped. The following day another crew was hijacked and robbed of their belongings and working tools at Brazaville in Atteridgeville.
In recent times, healthcare workers have found themselves under attack when doing their work in communities leading to an outcry and a call for the law enforcement agencies to act swiftly in bringing perpetrators to book. “We welcome this positive development and hope that it will lead to other arrests as this suspect was not working alone. We will be calling for the harshest sentence on this case,” remarked Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
