Department of Health Department of Health 2022/09/27 - 22:00
The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) wishes to inform the public, patients and their families that the Helen Joseph Hospital is currently experiencing a shortage in water supply which is affecting services in some areas of the facility.
The affected areas include the hospital’s Emergency Department, Theatre and Intensive Care Unit, as well wards that are situated in higher floors (4 – 7th floor) of the hospital. As part of efforts to ensure that there is minimal impact on critical services, the hospital is continuing with urgent services, especially at its theatre.
The shortage of water supply is because of challenges experienced by Johannesburg Water since over the weekend. The utility has supplied water tanks to pump water into the system. This intervention has helped to ensure that the hospital services continue, albeit under constrained circumstances. In the interim the facility has sourced mobile toilets to ensure that patients and staff have access to ablution services.
The hospital borehole is supplying water to some areas including the kitchen, so cooking services for patients has not been affected.
The Department wants to further assure the public that the hospital’s clinics are not closed, patients are still seen and managed at the facility. However, we advise patients in need of primary healthcare services to visit nearby clinics and community healthcare centres.
Meanwhile, the Department wishes to notify communities of Ekangala and surrounding areas that services at Ekangala, Dark City and Rethabiseng clinics in Tshwane are now restored. The services were disrupted last week Thursday (22 September) due to community protest.
