Media Statement - HPV VACCINATION SECOND PHASE CAMPAIGN TO START EARLY SEPTEMBER IN PUBLIC SCHOOL_ (1).pdf

Department of Health Department of Health 2022/08/30 - 22:00

The second leg of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination campaign will take place between 1 September and 31 October 2022 in all public primary and special schools.

The aim of the HPV vaccine is to help prevent infection and protect girls against the human papillomavirus type 16 and 18 that can cause cervical cancer later in life.

During this second phase, school health nurses will also administer an additional booster dose of Tetanus and reduced amount of diphtheria (Td) vaccine to all Grade 5 girls and boys to prevent disease outbreaks amongst learners and communities. Girls will be given two injections (HPV and Td).

The Td vaccine is given to prevent Diphtheria disease outbreaks that might not show (asymptomatic) or can present as a sore throat amongst learners, and it is given to prevent tetanus, commonly referred to as “lockjaw” that can cause painful stiffening of muscles that can lead to serious health problems.

Parents, caregivers and legal guardians who did not sign the consent form at the beginning of the year are encouraged to do so to ensure that their children do not miss out on the HPV and Td vaccination drive. Learners aged 12 years and above can assent, however, parental involvement is always encouraged.

The same signed consent form will also be used for routine health assessments as part of the Integrated School Health Programme that includes provision of health education, eye, ear, oral assessments, catch- up immunisations, as well as deworming (if ticked) and assessment for any other health barriers that can hinder learning.
