The Gauteng MEC for Health Ms Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko will on Monday, 31 October 2022 bid farewell to a group of medical students who will be leaving for Cuba to study medicine under the Nelson Mandela Fidel Castro Medical Training Programme.
The programme is part of bilateral agreement signed between South African and the Republic of Cuba in 1996 to cooperate in the field of health with the aim of producing highly skilled clinicians in the area of primary health care as part of strengthening the local healthcare system.
To date, Gauteng Department of Health has send 461 students to study medicine in Cuba for six years between 2011 and 2015 academic year with the last cohort of student intake in September 2015.
