Co-operative Financial Institutions (CFIs) are aimed at addressing the problem of economic exclusion of millions of township communities who remain largely marginal to the mainstream economic activity in terms of ownership and control. They are also aimed at addressing the common financial needs of township entrepreneurs and communities who remain financially excluded from access to credit and banking facilities offered by mainstream private banks. CFIs also build on the tradition of self-financing found in the community-initiated schemes like burial societies and stokvels, and reduce over dependency of external state funding of enterprise development.
