Department of Roads and Transport 2020/08/20 - 22:00
The Department of Roads and Transport undertook a five-month, R9 million road rehabilitation project as part of the drive to improve the state of road infrastructure in the Emfuleni Local Municipality. This is part of the Department’s Smart Mobility strategy which prioritises the delivery of quality road infrastructure to improve mobility and contribute to growing the economy of Gauteng.
The project included the rehabilitation of the pavement structure along Adams Road, Moshoeshoe and Vilakazi Streets; improving pedestrian safety by installing sidewalks and improving functionality of drainage structures.
These roads are major arteries in Emfuleni and their state posed a huge challenge in the economy of the Vaal area.
A total of thirty labourers were employed, on monthly basis, for the entire period of construction.
Meanwhile, the Department has recently undertook roadworks, on various sections along Road R59 between the City of Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng District Municipality.
Other road rehabilitation programmes undertaken by the Department recently included:
Road project: P103/2 (Malibongwe Drive) Pavement layer repairs involved pavement edge repairs, widening and road markings;
Road project: R558 (Lawley Station) involved overlay and road markings;
Road project: P74/1 (Hekpoort Road) involved fog spray and road markings.
Currently ongoing projects include P16/1 (R24) in the Magalies CBD to upgrade stormwater management system and pavement layer repairs and roadworks along D51 (Allandale Road) involving the construction of bypass, installation of sub-soil drains as well as the rehabilitation of failed section.
Benefits to Gauteng residents, motorists, business and communities include improved roadway capacity, reduced travel times, enhanced driving experience, easy access to business, residential and agricultural estates as well as improving general road safety.
On road project management, the Department ensures, at all times, that contractors working on its projects should strive to at all times “deliver a quality product, on time and within budget”.
“Roads infrastructure forms the core of the sixth administration efforts to reignite the economy of our province. If we are to reposition Gauteng as the inland hub of freight and logistics, we need to be smart in the upkeep and maintenance of our road infrastructure” added Mamabolo.
