PTIU joins other law enforcement agencies to arrest three suspects

The Department's Public Transport Inspectorate Unit (PTIU) formed part of a multi-disciplinary law enforcement team that arrested three men for shooting at the officers and for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition at the Thokoza hostel, City of Ekurhuleni. 
On Tuesday, 25 July 2023, SAPS members responded to reports of a taxi conflict in the Eikenhof area, Johannesburg South. Upon arrival, the officers were confronted by a tense conflict between members of the Faraday Taxi Association and the Lenasia United Taxi Association (LUTA). SAPS members were also informed there were possible hitmen within the surroundings of the R82 next to Jackson and Golden Highway next Lehae, Soweto. 
While monitoring the situation, members spotted a suspicious vehicle and they attempted to stop it, after switching on their blue lights and siren. The occupants in the vehicle, in response, started shooting in the direction of the police and members returned fire. PTIU members were called in to provide back-up as well as other police officials. This included the SAPS' Ekurhuleni Tactical Response Team (TRT). 
The vehicle drove in the direction of R557/R59 towards Kliprivier where they continued to open fire at members of a private security company and local SAPS, who had joined in the pursuit. They proceeded to give chase and the vehicle drove into Thokoza hostel, where three suspects were rounded up and arrested. 
The three suspects tried to flee the scene but were apprehended and an automatic rifle – an AK47 with two magazines and live ammunition – was found in their possession. The vehicle was suspected to have been hijacked. No injuries were reported. PTUI members are responsible for public transport monitoring as well as ensuring law enforcement, improving visibility and active involvement in matters related to public transport violence.
