Social Development increase awareness on Albinism

Department of Social Development 2020/11/02 - 22:00

Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD) together with Albinism Society of South Africa (ASSA) held albinism awareness campaign in Kagiso Lutheran Church, West Rand on Saturday.

Giving the purpose, Regional Social Work Manager Precious Nxumalo said the campaign was to increase public awareness and knowledge on protection for people with albinism. Also to create awareness on the rights of people with albinism and to educate about  albinism so that the traditional leaders, church leaders, community members and managers of NPOs can have the correct information to teach and share in their respective spaces and impart information  on where people with albinism can be assisted.

The department wanted to clarify myths regarding people with albinism as there are popular beliefs that people with albinism don't die, they simply vanish from the society.  Also that their body parts make potent charms that can make people rich and successful. Many thinks that albinism is a punishment or curse from ancestors due to wrong doings in the family. All of the above are not true, people with albinism are just the same as all of us, they only have different pigmentation.

Giving the testimony during the event was Ms Nomasonto Mazibuko from Albinism Society of SA (ASSA). She said, "We are also human like any other person and we deserve to live. When you kill us due to the myth's society have that killing a person like me you get extra powers you are destroying the world. People should learn to accept everyone regardless of colour", she said.

Protection against the human rights violations of people with albinism requires joint and coordinated response involving government, religious organisations, traditional leaders and albinism organisations. Gauteng Department of Social Development continues its support to people with albinism.
