Gauteng's COVID-19 vaccination programme is on track with the launch of the Transnet train which will distribute vaccines.
The health train- known as Transvaco-  is focused on bringing COVID-19 vaccines to remote communities and those with limited medical resources.
Unveiling the trian in Springs on Thursday, Gauteng Premier David Makhura said the train will go a long way in assisting the province's vaccination drive.
Premier Makhura was accompanied by Roads and Transport MEC Jacob Mambolo and Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina.
The train has state-of-the-art vaccination facilities, which include ultra-low temperature vaccine fridges designed and built by Transnet's manufacturing division. It can store more than 100 000 vials of different types of vaccines.
The train is modelled on the Phelophepa, which has been offering rail-based healthcare services across South Africa for almost 30 years.
Only now it consists of nine carriages – two for accommodation, a kitchen, dining cart, storage, security and a vaccination carriage with consulting rooms. 
The train will be stationed at Springs train station from 19 August until 2 September 2021. 
It will then proceed to the Eastern Cape to continue with the national vaccination programme.
Premier Makhura said he was concerned about the declining number of people taking the vaccine. He emphasized that vaccines reduce the chances of severe illnes and hospitalisation.
To ramp up the vaccination rollout campaign, Gauteng members of the executive have been on a drive to encourage the public to take the jab.
MEC Jacob Mamabolo whose drive is focused on  the taxi ranks, said he was pleased that the industry was taking a leading role.
"We are pushing back vaccine hesitancy and the perceptions and stereotypes against the vaccine" he said.
The Premier's also visited two additional vaccination sites in Thokoza and Katlehong where he encouraged men to get their COVID-19 vaccine.
Ekurhuleni Mayor, Mzwandile Masina emphasised the province's call for people to visit the vaccination centres whether registered or not.
"As long you are within the specified age group, you will get the jab at any of our sites. We will assist those who need to register in the EVDS, and we will inoculate those who have registered but awaiting text messages," he said.
As at 19 August 2021, 2,494,253 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in the province.  ​
