Department of Social Development 2024/09/15 - 22:00

On Saturday, 07 September 2024, the Department hosted a career expo for teenage boys and girls at Desmond Tutu Child and Youth Care Centre in Tshwane, aiming to help them make informed career choices and to select the right high school subjects to meet future tertiary education requirements.

Professionals from various fields shared insights into their careers and the paths they followed. Among the speakers was Rendani Rabambi, a Director at Rabambi Attorneys, who emphasized discipline, continuous learning, and long working hours as key  to success in law. Rabambi also highlighted that law offers multiple career options, from being an attorney to becoming a legal advisor or prosecutor.

Phathutshedzo Doyoyo, the Program Director and a social work student at the University of South Africa (UNISA), spoke about his journey, which led him from a career in journalism and working at PRASA to discovering his calling in social work. He encouraged the youth to pursue careers they are passionate about, saying, "It is never too late to realize your dreams."

Phathutshedzo Sambula, a digital photographer and director at Plentiful Harvest, noted how fortunate today's youth are to have platforms like this expo, where they can ask questions and explore different career options. Sambula explained the distinctions between television and video production, highlighted universities offering photography and film studies, and urged the children to use the internet wisely for research and mentorship.
