University of the Witwatersrand Professor, Bruce Mellado and Dr Mary Kawonga have warned residents of a possible second COVID-19 surge in Gauteng this year if people's adherence to public health measures declines.
Mellado made the remarks during the Gauteng COVID-19 Command Council's weekly update.
Although COVID--19 daily new infections have been relatively low over the past two months, he warned that in light of the resurgence of coronavirus infections, being experienced across the world, the second surge has proven to be bigger than the first and cited France as an example,
"France had a surge then levelled off, but now they are in the middle of a second surge that is way bigger than the first one" he said.
He said monitoring is important to understand when the second surge might happen, based on the experience of other countries there is a possibility of a second surge in South Africa, and has warned residents not to let their guard down.
"We should not become complacent, and think COVID--19 is gone. We must continue to be vigilant and wear our masks at all times, continue to practise physical distancing," he added.
Gauteng province has worked hard to overcome the peak of the pandemic and members of the public are urged to continue adhering to the non-pharmaceutical interventions and a wear mask in public and when they visit loved ones.
