Gauteng MEC for Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure Jacob Mamabolo has reiterated the department's commitment to fast-track transport infrastructure-related developments in the City of Ekurhuleni.

Massive freight infrastructure is set to foster economic growth as goods will be delivered on time.

"The Tambo-Springs Intermodal Hub Development project has been identified to address the need for expanded container capacity within Gauteng and optimise the migration of containerised cargo from road to rail," said Mamabolo.

Additional roads that will be required to support the hub are the K146, K148 and D817. These roads will provide mobility and accessibility to the developments in the surrounding areas such as Zonkiziswe, Magagula Heights, Katlehong and Vosloorus.

The MEC was speaking during his engagements with Tambo-Springs Intermodal Gateway developers on Thursday.

The migration from road to rail, he said, will greatly improve the efficiency of the transport system, decarbonise the roads and assist in reducing greenhouse-gas emissions.

Mamabolo also announced the plans for the construction of the K148/N3 interchange as a first step to providing the necessary transport networks to support the Tambo Springs Hub. This includes the construction of the K148 route.

A portion of the N3 of the new interchange will be widened, upgrading it from a dual to a three-lane carriageway.

"The route and interchange will serve as key mobility access to Tambo Springs for freight from the N3 highway."

Furthermore, the province's Smart Mobility vision recognises the need to strengthen inland ports such as the City Deep and the construction of new ports such as Tambo Springs, Pyramid, Rosslyn, Westrand and Vaalcon as critical in the development of freight movement in the province and country.
