The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) will deliver mobile classrooms to Thubelihle High School in Soweto in the coming weeks.

On Thursday, the School Governing Body (SGB) and parents closed the school over the never-ending renovations that began five years ago. In addition, concerns have been raised over drainage system.

Teaching and learning were disrupted as no one was allowed on the premises.

Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi has expressed dismay over the refurbishment delays.

"Indeed, we share parents' frustration and we call upon the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) to fast track the process of appointing a new contractor after terminating the current one."

For the past five years, Lesufi said his department allocated approximately R12 million through the implementing agent of the DID for overall repairs.

"We are disappointed that the project that started five years ago is still not complete. Infrastructure challenges were long identified hence the designated budget and allocation. We hope that DID will complete this project accordingly," said Lesufi.

Following a meeting with the officials from GDE, the SGB has agreed to allow schooling to resume on Friday, 13 May 2022.
