A total of 960 suspects who were arrested across Gauteng this weekend are due to appear at various magistrate courts this week.
The arrests were made in Ekurhuleni, West Rand, Johannesburg and Sedibeng.
The suspects were arrested on various charges such as contravention of the Disaster Management Act, car hijacking, murder, robbery, rape, assault, possession of drugs and stolen goods, dealing in liquor without a licence, driving while under the influence of alcohol and malicious damage to property.
A total of 78 unlicensed firearms and 102 rounds of ammunition were recovered during the operations which included stop and search, crime combating, suspects tracing and tip-offs from the community.
The Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has welcomed the arrests and recovery of illegal firearms.
"These are the firearms that are used to commit serious and violent crimes in our province, and I am happy that our members are working hard to recover them.
"I believe that we have saved lives of innocent people that would have been killed by criminals using these firearms," said Mawela.
