A new initiative that will support victims of Gender-Based Violence Response by offering comprehensive services has been unveiled.
The Green Door campaign, led by the Gauteng Department of Community Safety will see residents, councillors, Community Policing Forum (CPFs), and other stakeholders collaborating with the police to protect the women and children in the community.
The project will assist victims with emotional containment, trauma debriefing and referral to the nearest police stations to open a case.
Speaking at the launch in Dobsonville, Soweto, Head of Department Nontsikelelo Sisulu said community members who know those who are committing crimes urged them to report them to the law enforcement agencies.
"We need men to be safety ambassadors and actively involved especially in the fight against gender-based violence and femicide, women should not get used to being abused emotionally and economically. It is important for women to put themselves first," said Sisulu.
Dobsonville is listed amongst the top 30 GBV hotspots nationally. Dobsonville Police
Station Commander, Brigadier Ngubane said weapons that are mostly used to kill women and children are guns and knives.
"Cases of gender-based violence in Braamfischer occur mostly on Sundays in the morning and Saturday nights when people are consuming alcohol," said Brigadier.
Campaign ambassador, Thamie Mokoena thank the department for offering such much-needed services to the community and appeal to the community to use this Green Door
"I also want to call upon all the male victims of gender-based violence to come forward and report any form of abuse," said Mokoena. END
