Strengthening Safety – Gauteng Government Partners with Universities to Combat Crime

Department of Community Safety 2025/04/11 - 10:29

In a move to enhance safety in Gauteng, the Department of Community Safety has joined hands with two academic institutions to tackle crime through knowledge-sharing and strategic partnerships. On Friday, March 28, 2025, Head of Department Ms. Nontsikelelo Sisulu led a delegation to the University of Johannesburg’s Doorfontein Campus where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) were signed.

Upon arrival at UJ, the delegation was welcomed by University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Letlhokwa Mpedi, Chief Operations Officer Dr. Mpoti Ralephata, and their team. Also in attendance were representatives from the district SAPS, led by Brigadier Lloyd, the office of the Chief of Police from JMPD, and the GGT 2030 private security team.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Sisulu underscored the significance of this initiative as one of the department's largest efforts in the fight against crime. "There is no better space to collaborate than with those in the academic and theoretical fields," she stated. She also emphasised that combating crime requires unwavering support from the public, government, and private stakeholders.

Prof. Mpedi echoed these sentiments, highlighting that safety is not just a professional concern but a personal one as well. "Before we are leaders, we are parents who worry about the safety of our children in Johannesburg," he said. He also stressed the importance of universities engaging with their surrounding communities rather than operating in isolation.

The ceremonial signing of the MoU symbolised a long-term commitment to creating a safer Gauteng through research, strategic planning, and active collaboration.

This milestone was not only celebrated in Johannesburg. Following the signing at UJ, the delegation proceeded to North-West University’s Vereeniging campus, where they met with Deputy Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sibusiso Chalufu, Judicial Services and Prosecutor Head Mr. Ujeet Maharaj, and Sedibeng Community Safety Executive Manager Mr. James Hammer.

The North-West University signing was streamed globally, with University Principal and Vice-Chancellor Prof. Bismark Tyobeka joining virtually. This partnership underscores the vital role that academic institutions, government, and private stakeholders play in advancing community safety and security. As Gauteng strives to make its communities safer, this partnership serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating the power of collaboration in tackling one of society’s most pressing issues.
