Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi has dismissed allegations that the incident that transpired at Elspark Hoerskool in Germiston on Monday was racially motivated.

It is alleged that two learners suffered stab wounds after they were involved in a fight that was captured in a video footage.

During the meeting between MEC Lesufi and the School Governing Body (SGB) on Tuesday, it was revealed that the incident emanated from a lost cellphone belonging to one of the learners.

MEC Lesufi has called upon anyone who alleges that there is racism at the school to provide the department with information for action to be taken.

"We can't have a society that believes that other people are not important, we are all important. I don't feel that it's a racial war. I'm sending the school management to go and gather all the relevant evidence and present to us, so we can be in a position to pass judgement.

"We have a responsibility to build a true non-racial South Africa, and it starts in the classroom, and all parents must feel that their children are protected," he said.

Meanwhile, the SGB has launched an investigation which will lead to the identification of the culprit and necessary disciplinary action will be taken against all those who were involved in the incident.

The Department of Education's psycho-social team has been dispatched to Elspark Hoerskool in Germiston to support all the learners affected by the incident.

The report from the district officials and the school will be provided to MEC Lesufi after investigations are completed.
