Celebrating 30 years of women empowerment and development

By Kamogelo Mmeti

The month of August has been dedicated to celebrating women nationwide under the theme "Celebrating 30 Years of Freedom Towards Women's Development". This year Women's Month campaign takes stock of progress made on socio-economic empowerment of women since the advent of democracy and indicate the achievements of the Women Charter. We sat down with several women in infrastructure development who were able to give us an insight into  their careers, their journey and how their success has made an impact in their surroundings, the same women who were able to advice everyone, young or old, male, or female on how to prioritize their careers and how to persevere in the construction industry

This year, we honor the trailblazing generation of women and celebrate the strides made in advancing the inclusion and development of women in Gauteng. We pay homage to the countless contributions that women make in the public space and the quiet corners of everyday life. We also continue to celebrate women in construction who continue to strive on equality in the industry.

While speaking to Nolubabalo Tsolo, a Chief Quantity Surveyor at the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) I realized that this industry is still male dominated. "As a woman, you can defy all stereotypes, go against the grains and still achieve so much in a male-dominated industry." said Nolubabalo Tsolo.  She also emphasized on why women should go into the built industry and that being a part time lecturer has opened her eyes to some of the difficulties women face trying to make it in construction. Nolubabalo also stressed that the most important thing we can teach women is to never settle for less and that women should aim just as high as their male counterparts.

"The world will always try to find ways to tell you 'No'. In reality, the possibilities are endless". said Lebogang Mmeti, the Construction Project Manager at DID reminding us that there's a gap in the industry only women in the built industry can fill.

We at DID also did our part by hosting women engagement sessions at our regions to support, celebrate as well as educate them on how to prioritize themselves while excelling in their careers.
