The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport's Head of Department (HoD), Dr Thulani Mdadane, hosted the Gauteng Taxi Industry Provincial Structures to reflect on progress made in relation to taxi summit resolutions as agreed to in 2019. The meeting took place on Friday, 01 September 2023 at the Gautrain Management Agency (GMA) head offices in Midrand, Johannesburg.

Delegations from SANTACO (Gauteng) as well as (Gauteng) NTA represented the Taxi Industry Provincial Structures.

In their presentation, the taxi industry heads made reference to the 2019 Taxi Summit, where resolutions and recommendations were agreed to. They voiced concerns related to delays regarding financial assistance that was promised and has, as yet, not been delivered as per the agreement.

The structures also pointed out the role they played during COVID-19 lockdowns, where they, as essential services, continued to provide transport services to commuters. Their concern was an amount of R9.6 million grant requested for the procurement of personal protective equipment (PPEs), which was not received timeously. In its response, the Department assured structures that the funds will be repurposed and allocated to them for use.

The provincial taxi industry further indicated it forms the backbone of economic and social activities as it accounts for transportation of 70% of commuters in the province. The industry is, however, concerned that it accounts for the bulk of transportation activity, without a subsidy from the government.

HoD Dr Mdadane reiterated the government's commitment to support and develop the sector. "The Department is committed to the development of the taxi industry" said the HoD. He also assured the structures that financial support is available, in the form of R20 million, that will be rolled over by Treasury as part of its R60 million grant issued in the previous financial year.

He further encouraged the industry leadership to ensure the industry remains relevant and that there is room for continuity which will further enhance economic development.

The Department and Gauteng Taxi Industry structures plans to meet at a later date to discuss and assess progress made thus far.

The Department hosted the 2019 Provincial Taxi Summit to, amongst others, address challenges raised at the inaugural 2016 Taxi Indaba. It further served to facilitate the enhancement of a mutually beneficial partnership between the sector and levels of government, working together towards the attainment of a safe, accessible, reliable, affordable provision of public transport services in the province.
