Last Friday, 16 February 2024, former learner Thato Matabane encouraged learners at Mamelodi High to stay focused on their dreams and ignore peer pressure.
Matabane, who is currently a second-year student at University of Pretoria invigorated learners and said, “I am a proud former learner of Mams High from 2015 to 2020 and I’m here to tell you that education is crucial. Believe your teachers when they tell you that your future lies in your hands. Stick to your dream and never be persuaded otherwise because that may be detrimental to your future”.Matabane was speaking during a Gauteng Provincial Government back-to-school activation campaign.Germina Mangwato, a Social Worker from Gauteng Department of Social Development warned learners that there is no solution to substance abuse and crime except jail, leading to destruction of their own lives. Instead, she encouraged learners to concentrate on obtaining a bright future.“Don’t fall prey to peer pressure and want to experiment with drugs such as space cookies, by doing so you will be destroying your own future”.About 75 learners received school uniforms packs that comprises of a trouser, shirts, socks, a pair of shoes, socks, a jersey, a tunic/trouser, vest and underpants.Learners were also cautioned against various social ills such as teenage pregnancy, bullying, and gangsterism.
