Significant progress has been made in restoring the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH) to its full capacity.
While the process of destruction and reconstruction is actively underway and progressing well, the project which is being undertaken in a phased approach to ensure continuity of healthcare delivery has resulted in significant progress.
The remedial works have resulted in the completion of the Radiation Oncology Unit to improve access to cancer treatment and care in the province, as well as the Accident and Emergency Department. The hospital is fully operational with a bed capacity exceeding that prior to the fire incident
A new state-of-the-art dry store facility has been constructed at the hospital to improve storage and accessibility, while a temporary access ramp was constructed to allow staff members to easily access 300 parking bays at P3. There has also been new fire doors have been installed.
Thursday, 16 April 2025 marked the fourth anniversary of the devastating fire incident. On the day the contractor successfully implemented planned medical gas shutdown to permanently reroute the medical gas supply pipeline. This is part of preparation to enable a section of P4 to undergo demolition before being rebuild.
"As we reflect on the fourth anniversary there are several key milestones that are worth highlighting in so far as progress to restore the fire damaged areas as CMJAH. The remedial work project is being implemented in a phased approach to ensure continuity of the healthcare delivery throughout the process," stated GDoH head of communication, Motalatale Modiba.
"Outside of the remedial work the department continues to generally improve services at CMJAH. The MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko in February 2025 officially opened a new Breast Health Clinic This facility is now alleviating congestion in outpatient departments, reducing waiting times, and improving patient experience of care. It serves as a multidisciplinary centre for clinical care, research, and training in collaboration with Wits University," Modiba further explains.
The Gauteng Department of Health has acknowledged strategic partnerships and donations which have contributed in the acceleration of the remedial work.
