As the world starts to observe the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, Gauteng Police Commissioner Alias Mawela encouraged society to refrain from supporting social events that degrade and undermine women.
Commissioner Mawela was speaking during the Gauteng Provincial Government launch program, which was hosted at Temba Stadium in Hammanskraal, north of Tshwane.

He said, “The Mavuso stokvel which is prevalent among the local patrons is such a gathering that degrades women. The rate of women abuse, rape and common assault are prevalent especially in Temba”.

Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko reiterated that Temba was chosen to host this year’s program due to its high rate of crime in the province.

The 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign is a United Nations campaign which takes place annually from 25 November to 10 December. Other key commemorative days during this period include World Aids Day on the 1st December and the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, on 3 December of every year.
