Smart Mobility Weekends - Road maintenance campaign off to a notable start

Department of Roads and Transport 2021/04/12 - 22:00

MEC Jacob Mamabolo in partnership with the City of Johannesburg's Road Agency (JRA) launched the Smart Mobility Weekends on Saturday, 10 to Sunday, 11 April 2021 at the Quadrant off-ramp near N1 Highway and Malibongwe Drive, in the City of Johannesburg.

The campaign is undertaken jointly with municipalities, seeking to build partnerships to seamlessly attend to the task of enhancing road maintenance of provincial and local networks.

Chief amongst the objectives of the campaign is improving the overall condition of the Gauteng province's road network. It primarily aims to ensure that all public roads in the province are maintained to acceptable standards, are safe and allow for smart, easy movement of people and goods as part of the Department's strategy of Growing Gauteng Together Through Smart Mobility.

Over the weekend, teams from both the Department and roads agency attended to parts of major arterial roads in the City that included Elnita, Northumberland, Malibongwe, Beyers Naude, Ysterhout, Epson, Capital, Olivenhout, Commercial and Albert.

Activities included, but not limited to, grass cutting; patching of potholes; undertaking road markings; installing signage and fixing traffic lights.

To enhance the campaign's impact, MEC Mamabolo has revealed that activities in the coming week, 24- 25 April, at the heart of Johannesburg's Central Business District (CBD) are being finalised.

Talking about taking the campaign to other cities and towns, MEC Mamabolo indicated that "we are already in talks with other municipalities across the province to be part of the campaign and so far, the response has been very positive. We are going to ultimately win the war against potholes. As partners, we are determined to make a difference and ensure the deterioration is halted and improve the driving conditions on our road network whilst improving safety in the process".

Speaking of the campaign, Member of Mayoral Committee for Transport Cllr Nonhlanhla Makhubo indicated the City was excited about the partnership as the City is intensifying its efforts to unlock service delivery.

She announced that JRA has reopened its asphalt plant, which will significantly contribute to the potholes repair programme throughout the City.

The MMC added that 'the JRA is currently undertaking an Accelerated Service Delivery Programme, which is a city-wide approach across all seven regions with an extensive scope; including pothole repairs, patching, pavement cleaning, corrugations and collapsed makeshift pipe bridges and road markings."

"The Smart Mobility Weekends will aid and complement our efforts of improving the conditions of the road across the City" concluded the MMC.
