Gauteng Provincial Government is deeply saddened by the passing of the Mayor of Joburg, Moloantoa Geoffrey Makhubo.
Makhubo died at the age of 53 on Friday from health complications related to COVID-19, having been admitted in hospital last Saturday.
Three weeks ago, Makhubo tested positive for COVID-19 and he was last week admitted to hospital after his health took a turn for the worse.
Premier Makhura expressed Gauteng government heartfelt condolences to Makhubo family and the City of Johannesburg.
"We are shaken by deep sadness and feel the excruciating pain of losing Mayor Makhubo. I send my heartfelt condolences to the wife, Mrs Dikeledi Makhubo, children, close relatives, friends and comrades of Mayor Makhubo," Premier Makhura said.
Makhura further noted that Mayor Makhubo was a loyal and committed servant of the people who dedicated his time to the development of the City and the overall improvement in the quality of life for all the people of Johannesburg.
Councillor Eunice Mgcina acting Executive Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC)for Health and Social Development said they were hoping that the Executive Mayor would beat the virus and return to work and lead the city as they face this pandemic that has devastated lives and livelihoods.
"In these difficult times, the City of Joburg stands with the Makhubo family, friends and residents of the city" she said.
She said the office of the executive mayor and council speaker would announce further details in due course. Makhubo's family has requested privacy and space as they process the untimely passing of the mayor.
