Tshwane violence - Public transport services to remain normal

Department of Roads and Transport 2019/09/02 - 22:00

Gauteng Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure MEC Jacob Mamabolo has been assured that Tshwane public transport services will not be interrupted on Tuesday, 03 September 2019.

This follows threats of a minibus taxi strike announced on Monday, 02 September 2019. Both the Gauteng National Taxi Association (GNTA) and South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) have dismissed as unfounded threats of a planned strike by the industry.

Both associations confirmed that taxi operations were running smoothly and as normal.

MEC Mamabolo had a meeting together with the South African Police Services (SAPS) led by Brigadier Abbey Nkhwashu, the taxi industry led by Mr Piet Mahlangu, GNTA’s Provincial Chairperson and Mr Mohlabane Tsebe, Regional Chairperson of SANTACO.

Taxi industry leaders, however, indicated there may be sporadic and isolated incidences of criminal activity and looting using the name of the taxi industry by people that are not even known to the industry.

They also wished to distance the taxi industry from such acts and condemned violence of any kind.

MEC Mamabolo has assured the residents and commuters of City of Tshwane that the mini-bus taxis and transport in general will operate smoothly. He added the City will be monitoring the situation to maintain order and stability, and that any opportunistic and isolated acts of criminal will be dealt with harshly by law enforcement agencies.
