Gauteng Premier, David Makhura says a new MEC for Health will be announced on Wednesday.
Makhura fired former Health MEC Bandile Masuku last month following the preliminary findings of an investigation by the Special Investigating Unit into allegations of corruption relating to the procurement of Personal Protective Equipment.
The SIU found that Masuku failed to execute his functions in compliance with the Constitution and the Public Finance Management Act.
Addressing lawmakers on Friday, 27 November 2020, during the end of year political report Premier Makhura announced that the Executive Council has also appointed an intervention team who are working to rebuild the Gauteng Department of Health as there are structural problems in the department.
"There are serious structural and systemic problems that undermine the clean governance and effective delivery public healthcare services in the department.
"PPE corruption has undermined public confidence and tough decisions had to be made. When the MEC is appointed, there is a team of experts, public health experts and management specialists who will work with the department to help re-organise the department to deliver health services in an optimal way in the Gauteng province. From December we will have a new MEC for Health," said Makhura
Makhura further praised health workers who have maintained high ethical and professional discipline during this challenging time.
The department has successfully tested 1 778 467 people for HIV to ensure that the province achieves the first 90% target of the (90/90/90) strategy. There have also been improvements in the TB treatment success rate is up to 80%, however it is still below targeted 90% (90/90/90).
From April to June 2020, we have enrolled 887 966 patients on Central Chronic Medicines Dispensing and Distribution Programme.
"The case fatalities for under five years childhood illness declined to below 3% of admitted children dying from Diarrhoea and Pneumonia," he added.
To ensure services are not affected at health facilities, he said government has also prioritised the filling of vacancies of CEOs in hospitals and community health centres across Gauteng. CEOs in most hospitals apart from Thelle Mogoerane and Rahima Moosa hospitals.
