MECs conduct oversight visits in Sedibeng- 13 October 2021

Gauteng Members of the Executive Councils (MECs') are undertaking community visits to monitor the improvement of service delivery in the Sedibeng District.

The region is faced with enormous challenges relating to service delivery backlogs in infrastructure, underdevelopment especially among the youth, access to housing, proper sanitation, electricity, water as well as refuse removal.

The MECs visits forms part of the preparations for the Sedibeng Investment Summit to unlock business and investment opportunities targeting the province's Special Economic Zones.

In line with the Growing Gauteng Together 2030 vision, the summit will bring together various stakeholders, such as government leaders, industry and sector players to deliberate on development initiatives, identify shovel-ready projects and attract investment pledges that will catalyse the building of the Vaal River City SEZ.

As part of the preparations, Premier David Makhura together with Transport MEC Jacob Mamabolo and Economic Development MEC Parks Tau handed over waste management trucks and completion certificates for 21 newly constructed roads in the Emfuleni Local Municipality.

On Tuesday, Premier David Makhura lead Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, COGTA MEC Lebogang Maile, Executive Mayor of Sedibeng District Municipality Lerato Maloka, and Emfuleni Mayor, Gift Moerane in visiting several waste water treatment plants to find a permanent solution to the sewage spillage into the Vaal River.

The Department of Water and Sanitation had invested a sum of R100 million towards the Phase One of the Sebokeng Bulk Waste Water Treatment Project. Premier

Makhura said the Gauteng Provincial Government had invested R200 million towards the project.

Meanwhile, Gauteng MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi visited the construction site of the new Rust-Ter-Vaal Secondary School in Vereeniging.

The scope of works consists of a completely new school to replace the existing school, inclusive of a fully integrated Smart School compliant rollout by the Department of Education.

Panyaza went on to visited Hoerskool DR Malan in Meyerton and New Hope Secondary School in De Deur to monitor school readiness for the final matric examinations set to start on 23 October. 

MEC for Social Development Morakane Mosupyoe observed the International Day for Elderly People where she distributed blankets.

Mosupyoe also engaged the community on challenges with Gender-Based Violence (GBV), substance abuse and child-headed households.

Infrastructure MEC Tasnim Motara went on a site visit to Pitseng Primary School and Frikkie Meyer to track infrastructure progress.

For her part, MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko engaged young people on the dangers of drugs in Evaton. 

Finance and e-Government MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko visited Small Farms to monitoring the implementation of the ICT training programme. 

Whereas, Health MEC Nomathemba Mokgethi conducted a clean-up campaign and tree planting at Winnie's Park Ext 1, Boipatong. 

On Thursday Makhura will open the R13.8 million state-of-the-art Library at t Boipatong. 

The facility is part of the Gauteng Government's programme to deliver what it refers to as 'Libraries of the Future' which serves the broader needs of everyone in communities, with the inclusion of modernized programmes and services meant for lifelong learning.
