Gauteng’s construction initiatives key in unlocking the future potential of the construction industry both locally and across the continent. Addressing delegates at this year’s 6th annual African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo held at Gallagher Convention Centre. MEC for Infrastructure Development (DID), Jacob Mamabolo said the event was important as it focused on how government and community stakeholders could collaborate to empower SMMEs and other underprivileged groups. MEC Mamabolo said infrastructure development was key to government’s initiative to create jobs, supporting smart city developments and on how the department would collaborate with community stakeholders to empower SMMEs. The two-day expo attracted thousands of delegates in the built environment. This included key public and private stakeholders from across the country and the continent, and various exhibitors from 65 countries showcasing their products and services. Through transformation of infrastructure, MEC Mamabolo said the department’s goal was to deliver its massive 340 projects worth of R4.5billion over the next three years and fighting poverty. “In addressing socio-economic issues, as the department we are working on the pipeline projects that create jobs for young people, women and disabled people. We are committed to enforce the transformation of historically disadvantage people, so that our people can live in a diverse community with a sustained infrastructure.” said MEC Mamabolo. The department requires all its main contractors involved in its 340 project sites to be at the sphere of empowerment and companies should include everyone irrespective of gender, race, disability or age
