In preparations for Gauteng to move to level 3 of the national lockdown, the provincial government visited a number of businesses across the province to monitor compliance of the lockdown regulations.
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura, together with MECs for Health and Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Bandile Masuku and Morakane Mosupyoe, visited the BMW and Nissan manufacturing plants in Rosslyn, Tshwane to assess compliance with health and safety protocols.
Premier Makhura said all sectors of the economy should get ready for the easing of the lockdown regulations, whilst emphasising that employers wouls be required to provide a workplace risk assessment plan that should include, but not limited to, the provision of screening and testing facilities, sanitary and social distancing measures and measures to protect vulnerable employees.
The Premier urged all businesses to prioritise the health and safety of all employees.
"We urge every business that is currently operating in Gauteng, as well as those that are preparing to open to take steps to protect their employees and prioritise their health and safety. We want to prioritise saving lives as we reopen the economy," Premier Makhura said.
The Premier said where possible, employees should be encouraged to work from home to limit the risk of transmission of the virus.
Premier Makhura also announced that the province, working with the BMW/Nissan manufacturing plants, was currently finalising plans for the establishment of a field hospital which would service the Rosslyn and Soshanguve communities, and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, other MECs visited different shopping centres across the province. MEC for Roads and Transport joined by MEC for Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mbali Hlophe visited Maponya mall. MEC for Infrastructure Development and Property Development, Tasneem Motara visited West Rand Mall. MEC for Human Settlements, Lebogang Maile and MEC for Safety, Faith Mazibuko visited Farmwise Marketing in Centurion.
During the Maponya Mall visit, the inspection saw MEC Mamabolo and MEC Hlophe issue a warning to the DStv outlet for contravening level 4 regulations. The store had no visible social distancing floor markings, workers did not have gloves, and they did not sanitise their hands whilst exchanging decoders with customers.
MEC Mamabolo said officials would revisit the store at a later stage and if they were still not complying with regulations, they would be forced to close them down.
