Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has issued a clarion call for all sectors of society to join forces with the government in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV). Speaking during the provincial launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children on Monday, 25 October 2024, held at the Union Buildings in Tshwane, Lesufi emphasized that the battle against GBV is huge and demands collective action.

The campaign, which commenced with a gathering at the Women's Living Heritage Monument in Tshwane, included a march to the Union Buildings, culminating in a night vigil. Faith-Based Organizations, civil society, and community members joined forces to reflect and pray for an end to violence against women and children.

Premier Lesufi, alongside Gauteng MECs for Social Development, Health, and e-Government, , acknowledged the tireless efforts of community and religious leaders present at the vigil. In his address, he commended their unwavering commitment to combating GBV, even if it meant spending the night outdoors as a symbolic stance.

Lesufi highlighted the concerning rise in violent crimes targeting women and children, as revealed by recent crime statistics, which he described as a damning indictment of society.

"The recent crime stats not only confirm what we already know but condemn all of us in shame. We must unite to protect our women and children. We cannot be a country that continues to disrespect and neglect its women and children. Things must change," said Lesufi.

The Premier called for a shift in strategy to address the root causes of GBV, including substance abuse, the proliferation of weapons, and societal attitudes.

"We need to accept that there are things we must change. We cannot continue using outdated strategies and expect different results. We must confront the issues of alcohol, drugs, weapons, and harmful attitudes head-on," he added.

Lesufi reaffirmed his administration's commitment to ensuring every corner of Gauteng is safe for women and children, pledging that the fight against GBV will extend beyond the 16-days campaign.

This campaign, running from 25 November to 10 December, is themed: "30 Years of Advancing Collective Action to End Violence Against Women and Children." It calls for intensified efforts and innovative approaches to create a society where all can live free from fear and violence.
