Over 2,5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been safely administered in Gauteng thus far.
Nationally nearly five million adults have been fully inoculated.
Scientists have reiterated that vaccines are an important part of minimising the spread of COVID-19 and achieve herd immunity. They offer protection to an individual, by reducing their risk of infection or the severity of their symptoms.
The vaccine that South Africa is administering COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective. They have been evaluated in tens of thousands of participants in clinical trials and approved by the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).
According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) serious side effects that could cause long-term health problems are extremely unlikely. 
NICD deputy director, Dr Natalie Mayet COVID-19 vaccine may cause side effects similar to signs and symptoms of the virus.
"You'll likely be monitored for 15 minutes after getting a COVID-19 vaccine to see if you have an immediate reaction. Most side effects go away in a few days. Side effects after the second dose might be more intense. Some people have no side effects," Mayet said.
If you've been exposed to COVID-19 and you develop symptoms more than three days after getting vaccinated or the symptoms last more than two days, self-isolate and get tested.
Mayet emphasised that even after a vaccine is given to you, it is still monitored for safety.
"If you have any questions about vaccines, your doctor, nurse or other healthcare professionals can help. Healthcare professionals then contribute to ongoing monitoring by informing the NICD of any side effects, even if they are very minor," Mayet concluded. ​
