Gauteng will in the next six weeks host all Premier Soccer League (PSL) and national first division team matches for the remainder of the 2019/20 season.
"We are delighted that we could be hosts of the resumption of the beautiful game. We want to thank the PSL for trusting us in helping them successfully conclude their programme after four months of being out of action," said MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation (SACR), Mbali Hlophe.
The matches will be played under strict COVID-19 conditions, in a controlled environment and without fans.
"Our collaborative infrastructure which includes sporting facilities for training and matches, hotels and hospitality services, health and wellness, transport and communications networks provide a favourable environment for adherence to COVID-19 health and safety protocols," said MEC Hlophe.
Hlophe said the decision to support the PSL conclude its season was made mainly with fans in mind, to allow them to see all the action from the comfort of their homes and shift their attention ..
"We want football to be settled on the field and not in the boardroom knowing the bragging rights and joy it bring to its supporters. As we enjoy football, we must all continue to play our part in stopping the spread of COVID-19," she urged.
Gauteng tourism Authority CEO, Yolanda Kona said, since its birth football has been the integral part of communities.
"It is more than a game, more than a sport, it is a way of life that we all embrace. In this time of uncertainty, may we all be reminded of this defining role – that every goal and every tackle gives hope to those directly or indirectly affected by the virus and continue to work together to combat the pandemic with the same spirit shown by the community of fans and supporters of the beautiful game," Kona said.
