Now in its second week, the Department of Public Transport and Roads Infrastructure is continuing with the Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign aimed at improving the overall conditions of the province's road network.

The campaign launched on April 11, was undertaken jointly with municipalities and seeks to build partnerships to seamlessly attend to the important task of enhancing road maintenance of provincial and local networks.

Speaking in Johannesburg over the weekend, MEC Jacob Mamabolo said that government has identified problems on the road network across the province and these challenges included potholes, damaged road surface, the need for grass cutting, vegetation, and installing road signage.

MEC Mamabolo said: "We are doing various things not just potholes, but potholes are the most important because they pose a risk and threat to the lives of road users, also because a damaged road has a negative impact on the economy, meaning, for companies and various businesses they have a high cost of a vehicle maintenance, (flat tyres as an example) so there's a definite impact on business income because there is an additional cost that comes with hazardous conditions on the roads.

"Families also incur negative impact on their households' income because they also as road users have to fix their cars that have been damaged by bad road conditions. We will win the war against potholes."

City of Joburg Executive Mayor, Geoff Makhubo said the Asphalt plant located in Booysen would significantly contribute to the potholes repair programme in the City.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency's Asphalt Plant, was first built in 1965, for the purpose of supplying asphalt for the City's internal roads maintenance programme, after experiencing chronic breakdowns.

MEC Mamabolo said he was pleased with roadworks as engineers repaired damaged roads in the Johannesburg CBD, in Braamfontein and surrounding areas.

The Plant also provided quality material enabling the department to patch 1 189 potholes on Saturday alone.
