The Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has launched a new campaign to deal with the backlog of drivers and learners license renewal in the province.
The #RequestASlotGP campaign allows people with expired drivers licences to utilise platforms such as email, mobile app and a web-based system to get slots for the renewal of their documents.
Speaking at the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) - NaTIS Facility in Waterfall Office Park in Midrand, Johannesburg, MEC Jacob Mamabolo said the campaign will kick-off from this week.
The campaign will run concurrently with the already successful Smart Mobility Weekends Campaign and vaccination programme at the taxi ranks.
"Through this campaign, we seek to form partnerships with people, motorists and license cardholders to create platforms for them to request a slot. Applicants will be allocated slots within 30 days, upon receipt of the required, full information by the Department," said Mamabolo.
This information will be used primarily to prioritise those whose driving licence cards had expired during the COVID-19 lockdown period or earlier
According to Mamabolo,  his department will be targeting high density areas like taxi ranks because we have seen with the vaccination programme the spin-offs of going there are very powerful.
"We will be going to malls, we will go to popular places to say, "request a slot said MEC Mamabolo.​
Last week, Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula extended the deadline to renew these documents until the end of March next year.
Minister Mbalula revealed that Gauteng accounts for the highest number of licences not yet renewed in the country at 437,819 out of a total 980,038 expired licences.

- An Android-based Application (APP) is currently under construction and will be available from Monday, 06 September 2021.
