Child Protection Campaign Hits Crime-Ridden Vlakfontein

Department of Social Development 2024/05/31 - 22:00

On Thursday, 30 May 2024, the Gauteng Department of Social Development and Lenasia South Child Protection Forum, hosted a Child Protection Campaign at Igugulethu Primary School in Vlakfontein, Johannesburg South.

Last year, two learners from Qalaubusha High School in Vlakfontein were tragically murdered by a group of learners from the same area, disrupting matric exams.

According to Thandiswa Maqhinane, a Social Worker from the Lenasia South Child Protection Forum, Vlakfontein is a hotspot for crime, substance abuse, teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, and school dropouts. Maqhinane noted that most crimes go unreported due to a lack of resources for Social Workers and the police.

"Children engage in crime and gangsterism as they are influenced by 'inkabi' who use them to fight their battles.

Regarding the deaths of the two students, the provincial government had to intervene to ensure matric learners could write their exams since they were initially suspended," said Maqhinane.

Brandon Banks, a recovering substance user from Ennerdale, highlighted the importance of these campaigns in communities like Vlakfontein. Banks, previously involved in drugs, car hijacking, and possessing an unlicensed firearm, shared his story with the community.

"I am happy to stand in front of community members and share my story. I am currently writing my book, which will be published soon. I would also like to thank the Gauteng Department of Social Development for funding most rehabilitation centres," said Banks.
