The City of Johannesburg has honoured the deceased Executive Mayor Jolidee Matongo with a wreath-laying ceremony at the site where he lost his life.
Matongo (46) died in a motor vehicle accident along the Golden Highway in Lenasia on Saturday. 
He was from a local government voter registration drive in Soweto, alongside President Cyrill Ramaphosa and Premier David Makhura.
Speaking at the ceremony, speaker of council Nonceba Molwele said the city has declared a week of mourning in honour of Matongo.
The ceremony was attended by Matongo's family, metro police officers, and staff from the City of Johannesburg.
Matongo was appointed mayor on 10 August. He was replacing Geoff Makhubo succumbed to COVID-19 complications in July.
Molwele described Matongo as a patriotic fighter who passionately wanted to re-claim the city from the drugs.
"It is sad that within the space of 40 days, the city has lost two dedicated mayors."
Premier Makhura said Matongo was a committed and selfless activist who dedicated his time to the overall improvement of the quality of life of the people of Gauteng.
"Mayor Matongo executed his duties with a cool and calm demeanour and remained committed to selflessly serving the citizens of Johannesburg," said Makhura
Matongo's funeral will take place on Friday with a civic funeral. He would be buried at West Park Cemetery.​
