Plans to migrate more young women from social grants

Department of Social Development 2020/03/03 - 22:00

The Gauteng Department of Social Development plans to enrol one hundred thousand (100 000) young women who are recipients of child support grant into its Welfare to Work Program in the next five years.

The Welfare-to-Work Program is a comprehensive Employment and Training Program designed to promote self-sufficiency. It was started by the department two years ago with the aim of providing skills to young women who are recipients of child support grant and to move them out of the social security system.

These women are assessed to determine the best course of action, whether it is immediate placement into a job, placement into an education or training program, or both.

During the State of the Province (SOPA) address at Sefako Makgatho Health Science University, in Garankuwa, Tshwane, on Tuesday, Premier David Makhura said, “We believe that the current 34 000 young women who are beneficiaries of the program should work and earn their living through employment. And only senior citizens should receive grants in our communities”.

According to South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) over 1.8 million children receive child support grant in Gauteng last year.
