Mabe wants to prevent gender-based violence through sports

Department of Social Development 2021/10/26 - 22:00

The Chairperson of Mabe Sports Games, Lekgetho Mabe, says his Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) based in Protea Glen, Soweto wants to tackle the issue of gender-based violence through sports, by teaching young boys to respect women and girls at a grassroots level.

Mabe was speaking to Weekly Bulletin during the ‘Know Your NPO Status’ campaign hosted by that the Gauteng Department of Social Development at the Head Office in Johannesburg on Thursday.

He said, “We aim to keep the young ones going, more especially the boys because most activities recently are focused on a girl child. For now, we are using an open space for sports codes such as football, netball, and athletics.”

“I’ve taken this initiative to groom the kids so that they can compete at a professional level and be better people in future,” added Mabe.

He said it was a privilege for him to acquire the NPO Certificate because it will enable them to knock on the doors and apply for funding.

“The process of acquiring the NPO certificate was very easy because I followed all the requirements and applied accordingly,” he said.

The ‘Know Your NPO Status’ campaign was launched in 2019 by the Department of Social Development to educate Non-Profit Organisations to comply with the NPO Act.

NPOs registered with the Department are required, in terms of the NPO Act, to submit their annual reports, narrative and financial reports to the Department. This applies to all NPOs registered under the NPO Act, whether funded or unfunded.
