To boost and build a healthy living for senior citizens, the Gauteng Department of Social Development together with Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosted an Active Ageing Games at Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria on Friday.
The aim of these games is to promote healthy living andactive ageing. This activity attracted an estimated 1 000 elderly people across the region and provides the aged with the ability to improve quality of life.
According to one participants, Saul Raphiri (61) from Soshanguve older persons' initiatives helps their bodies to remain fit and strong to fight diseases such as flu. He also calls on government to support elderly with equipment and trainers who will assist with exercises.
Athlete David Ngobeni, added that the government should not neglect them. The support from government gives them courage as old people since their age don't allow them to do lots of things themselves.
Participants in the track and field have a range of options available, including duck walk, ball throwing and ball relay, 100-800 meters run, rugby ball throw, brisk walk, goal shooting, ring the stick and brisk walk and jukskei up.
Sedibeng and Ekurhuleni regions hosted similar events on last Thursday and Friday respectively.
