MEC for Community Safety, Faith Mazibuko launched the 2020 Safer Festive Season Campaign, themed "Tight Grip", on Friday, 20 November in Tsakane, Ekurhuleni.
"The festive season is generally categorised by heavy traffic flow, and roads experience increased pedestrian movement on freeways, certain categories of crime such as trio crimes increase drastically due to the ease of access and widespread abuse of alcohol and drugs in our communities," said Mazibuko.
She said Gauteng law enforcement agencies merged during this season to ensure the safety of residents.
Mazibuko said it was no coincidence that the launch took place in Tsakane as the area has been identified as one of those policing precincts with higher volumes of gender based and domestic violence and femicide (GBVF).
As the country approaches the 16 Days for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign, under the theme "Economic Justice for a Non-Violent and Non-Sexist South Africa", MEC Mazibuko reminded the security forces and guests of the central and critical role played by law enforcement in the fight against GBV.
"We are therefore appealing to all law enforcement to be vigilant and help fight and prevent human trafficking and other forms of GBV. We call upon all members of the communities to help root out places known as lolly-lounges. Let us be alert so that we can detect and prevent all forms of GBV," urged MEC Mazibuko.
MEC concluded by appealing to the members of the community to be active participants in fighting crime.
"Those driving under the influence of alcohol must know it is dangerous, we will not hesitate to deal with them, and those found to be over the limit will be arrested. When we say in Gauteng asibhenywa, asibhay' iskelem, siyabopha this is what we mean," said MEC Mazibuko.
The official launch culminated in an integrated motorcade that drove through the streets of Tsakane and Geluksdal, demonstrating the readiness and commitment of Gauteng Law Enforcement Agencies to deliver a safe holiday season.
