Schools reopened today for the 2021 academic year, after the reopening of both public and private schools was postponed for two weeks due to rising COVID-19 cases.
Gauteng Premier, David Makhura will on Monday, 15 February 2021 lead the provincial school readiness campaign.
The Premier, together with the MEC for Education, Panyaza Lesufi and MEC for infrastructure Development Tasneem Motara will hand over the Abram Hlophe Primary School in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.
All members of the Executive Council (MECs) will visit schools across the province. "More than 1,5 million learners will be back in classes and rotational system will be used to comply with COVID-19 restrictions" said MEC Lesufi.
He added that PPEs, sanitisers, textbooks and stationery have been delivered in all schools across Gauteng and learning will commence on the first day of school.
"Gauteng is ready, we can confirm that we are happy that all our schools are ready to accept learners, teachers started last week to prepare for the arrival of learners this week and all the schools are adhering to non-pharmaceutical measures," assured Lesufi.
The oversight visits to schools are meant to ensure that there is effective teaching and learning in all schools and COVID-19 regulations are followed and observed, and the appropriate resources are in place.
