Of the over 300 choirs taking part at the World Choir Games in Tshwane, 147 are South African with at least 79 from Gauteng. These including the local community and school choirs have had a chance to share the stage and learn from experiences chorale music can offer from across the globe. Over 16 000 voices have gathered in Tshwane from 04 to 14 July, to mark the 10th edition of the world's largest international choir competition happening for the first time ever on the African continent. Far more than the 32 countries that gathered in Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup™, South Africa and Gauteng is hosting 60 countries for the (Choir) Games. The initiative is based on the Olympic ideals, which aim to peacefully unify people and nations connected by song in a fair competition. They take place every two years on different continents. MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko says:The Gauteng City Region is glad to have brought this noble initiative to Africa, more so on its important milestone, the 10th edition. Africa is synonymous with music and as such it was very important that we brought the world's voices here to celebrate.” Not only did we want the world to experience our music and how our community choirs relate to their communities and cultures. We also wanted these (our choirs) to learn and be encouraged to take their craft seriously. Just like in many other crafts including sport, chorale music can also take us through to compete with the world”. The choirs are performing at various stages throughout Tshwane including townships like Ga-Rankuwa, Mamelodi and others.
