Gauteng Education MEC, Panyaza Lesufi met with Laerskool Bekker school officials on Saturday, 7 November 2020 following the release of an independent report into the death of Keamohetswe Seboko at the school in January.
The report, found that the teachers supervising 13 year-old Seboko and other learners were negligent and by extension the Department was also negligent. It is understood that Seboko had been swimming with around 60 other pupils during school hours when the incident happened.
MEC Lesufi said the independent report ruled out any act of foul play, but found inconsistencies in the reports from the principal and the teachers who were supervising the learners at the time of the incident.
"We took the school through the report. We have accepted the recommendations that ask us to take appropriate measures against five officials of the school. We have requested the School Governing Body to help us with that process. We have also accepted that the Department is also responsible. We have tasked our legal team this week to speak to the family's legal team to reach an amicable settlement," said Willie Dry, the chair of the school governing body
MEC Lesufi added that he accepted all the recommendations made by the report and would meet with the Seboko family to discuss a settlement agreement and that his
his department will take disciplinary action against five staff members from the Laerskool Bekker over Seboko's death.
