Throughout the month of August, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) led by MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko is participating in activities that honour and highlight the contributions made by women in health. 
Last week, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko joined the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in celebrating the courageous female Green Angels for their longstanding contributions in the provision of life-saving medical care to Gauteng residents.
The MEC commended the women in emergency care who on the day had put down their capes (uniform) and dressed elegantly as they were being celebrated for having risen to become active agents of change and social transformation, breaking barriers that once seemed impossible to break especially in sectors that traditionally were male dominated such as EMS.
"We appreciate and would like to applaud you for continuously breaking barriers and demonstrating remarkable resilience daily as you respond to medical emergency calls. 
"Despite the obstacles you encounter due to your challenging profession, ongoing paramedic attacks, and gender bias, you continue to stand tall, embodying the spirit of those who came before us, fighting for equality and recognition in every aspect of life," commended MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko. 
The celebration of these courageous women which was held at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital's Recreation Centre was attended by many women in Gauteng EMS including those in leadership roles comprising of 22 shift leaders and 10 station managers across Operations and the Emergency Communication Centre.
The Acting Chief Director of Gauteng EMS, Rueben Ruiters reaffirmed the heroines for their invaluable role ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day operations and responding to life-saving calls across the province. 
"Let me remind you that without you in the emergency care environment, a lot could not be achieved. Life without women is like a sky without the sun, the moon and stars. Let's continue to break the barriers, you belong, you care, and you serve," said Ruiters to a hall full of women in emergency care. 
In addition, the MEC also supported the medical staff at Mediwell Dainfern Medical Centre as they offered employees at the centre and the community of Fourways free dental, eye, mental health, hypertension and diabetes screenings as a way of bringing health services closer to them. 
"Our healthcare system is at its most effective when we collaborate, and today exemplifies the profound impact that collective efforts can have. When we unite around a shared vision, the health and well-being of our communities, our combined efforts lead to remarkable outcomes," said MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko, commending Mediwell Dainfern Medical Centre for their contribution in helping address health challenges.
