Premier David Makhura has commended women and young people for coming out in their numbers to get vaccinated.

"Women have been responding well in Gauteng, we are at 57% now. This shows that women are taking action to ensure that they are safe," Premier Makhura said.

Young people, especially the 35 years plus age group, have also responded to the vaccination drive.

However, Premier Makhura raised concern about men who are reluctant to get the jab in the province.

"In some regions, we have a challenge of men who are not getting vaccinated." the Premier said.

He was speaking at a walkabout visit at the Davon Abattoir Farm Palmietkuil vaccination site. The site, targeting hard to reach farming communities, in Lesedi Local Municipality, has vaccinated about 100 people.

Premier Makhura, who was accompanied by Gauteng MEC for Health Nomathemba Mokgethi during the visit, said people in the farms should know that they are not forgotten about.

"We are concerned about communities that are out of reach, such as farmworkers," said Makhura. To address this, he said the province is providing transportation to the vaccination site.

Currently, Gauteng Province is administering 53 000 vaccines per day. The provincial target is vaccinating 100 000 people per day.

As of 10 August, a total of 2 176 076 people has been vaccinated in the province.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases sits at 880 672 with 846 243 recoveries.

The total number of people currently hospitalised is 5830. END
