Gauteng Department Celebrates Dedication of Social Work Professionals

Department of Social Development 2025/03/28 - 22:00

As part of World Social Work Day celebrations, the Gauteng Department of Social Development's Central Corridor gathered at Soweto Meat Lovers in Protea Glen last Thursday, 20 March 2025, to honour the unwavering dedication of Social Workers to their communities.

This year's event was held under the theme "Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing," emphasizing the need for unity across generations to build a resilient society, preserve the environment, and pass down valuable knowledge for a better future.

Beyond celebrating the impact of Social Workers, the event also served as a farewell to the outgoing members of the Central Corridor Social Service Executive Committee.

Addressing attendees, former Registrar at the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP), Ms. Langi Malamba, highlighted the critical role of international solidarity, collaboration, and community partnerships in advancing the profession. She stressed the importance of building meaningful relationships with people and acknowledged the challenges that Social Workers face daily.

"Our work is about bridging the gap. We must appreciate and rebuild intergenerational solidarity to promote positive well-being, both among our colleagues and the clients we serve," said Malamba.

Outgoing Deputy Chairperson of the Social Service Executive Committee, Ms. Minah Mkhavele, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve on a platform that advocates for the profession and enhances social work standards in the region. She underscored the significance of World Social Work Day in elevating the profession and called for greater recognition and support from the Department.

"Social work is not easy; we deal with challenging cases every day, which is why debriefing is essential. I encourage Social Workers and Auxiliary Workers to actively participate in all activities and to continue advocating for our profession," Mkhavele said.

She also voiced concerns about limited resources and funding, urging for more substantial support to address the pressing needs of Social Workers.

"While we appreciate the Department's support, the challenges we face in communities require even greater resources. Let's continue to stand in solidarity, empower one another, and make the best of what we have," she concluded.

The event served as a heartfelt tribute to Social Workers, recognizing their vital contributions to society and reaffirming the need for collective efforts to support and strengthen the professionals.
