MEC Jacob Mamabolo unveiled members of the board of the Transport Authority for Gauteng (TAG) on Monday, 30 May 2022. The TAG was established through the Gauteng Transport Authority Act, Act 2 of 2019.
The act promulgation's aim was to establish and empower the Gauteng Transport Authority to give effect to the Constitution, National Transport Policy and legislation within the province. It also serves to consolidate transport functions of organs in the province.
Unveiling the thirteen members of the board, MEC Mamabolo remarked that "the TAG Board in the successful execution of its function must be ethical, practice good corporate governance and effective leadership. TAG should follow in the footsteps of GMA, which is a well-run entity"
The board's governance roles and responsibilities include steering and setting strategic direction; approval of policies that give effect to the direction provided; overseeing and monitoring the implementation and execution of policies and plans by management and ensuring accountability for performance.
For the authority to achieve its goals, it must discharge the following main functions:
- Undertake strategic transport and integrated planning for transport in the province;
- Promote the development of an integrated and accessible public transport network in the province; and
- Regulate public transport fares in the province.
Members of the board are individuals from the private sector, five Gauteng municipalities and the Department. They have been appointed for a three-year period and may be re-appointed for a further three- years. Board members are:
Meanwhile, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between TAG and Mobility Centre for Africa (MCA) was also signed. This is envisioned to assist the provincial government with research, development, piloting and rolling out of Smart Mobility initiatives and technologies in support of the Smart Mobility Vision 2030 for the province.
The MCA is an advocate for the development of future mobility solutions in collaboration with its partners in government, industry and academia.
